Senior

Postby Hunt » February 11th, 2009, 6:02 pm

Though it's still a long time for the release of their 4th album, Senior, I think we should talk about it's musical style.

Torbjørn and Svein have talked about Senior being the darker side of Junior, with more mature sounding music. I think it'll include more tracks like Flax, So Easy, Cry Baby and Sombre Detune.

I for one hope having less vocals; if there are any, I hope they would be sampled like So Easy.

And I'd really more downtempo and epic like Cry Baby, Romantiske Sløyd, as well as more of the calm and beautiful songs like 40 years back/come, Tristesse globale and Your Hands.

Well,
If we can assume that the interview that mentioned "Senior" was not just another example of the pair's dry humour, then I guess that Senior would definitely be a more down-tempo, ambient-minded album.

But I believe they were kidding.

I could be wrong!

aha, well, "senior" is likely to be a joking. but whatever the name is.
The point is the next album, (how amazing, just one month ago we were all dying for any info of long-awaiting new album, and now we are imaging the one after this) No doubt it will be darker & more ambient since their last 2 albums are the opposite.

and I agree with Hunt. Less vocal is better.
Things i'm not content with Junior, if any, is too much feat vocals on songs, seems like leaving only one song "Royksopp Forever" as ambient. If there must be some vocals, then let it be of Royksopp :(

I like heavy electronic sucha as Alpha male & Boys, also favor chilly track as So easy & Sparks.
40 years come back / dead to the world..etc are too light too weak for me.
Besides, I'm curious if they do techno or house or other genres.
Remind me (some1 else's remix) is quite techno feeling & awesome.

To be honest, I wouldn't believe anything I heard about a fourth album, even if it comes from Röyksopp themselves. The only exception is if they've already made it, which I believe is very unlikely. The reason why is that they've said they don't like planning their lifes, and I therefore think that they don't say like "Okey Svein, let's make an ambient album". I think the music and the style isn't made before they are sitting in their studio making it.

I think maybe Junior will be their best album yet, but still I also hope that their fourth release will include tracks like In Space, Looser Now and She's So. Though, I would be VERY surprised if they did "Melody A.M." part two, as they've made it clear that they don't like to do things over again. They always want to make new things. So maybe the bottom line is: expect the unexpected on the fourth release.

Anyways, great topic, it's great to have something to discuss while waiting for Junior :)
I live 10 minutes from Svein and Torbjørn. :)

I read a review of Junior today and it was a so so one, but is it really true that Senior will be another album release this year? The review states that senior will be out in fall of 2009. I really hope so, we have waited so long for Junior to come out since the understanding.

No noe here can say anything for sure. I think it's just a rumour hanging lightly in the air.

I thought it was a joke. It's not. It's coming late this year.

Source is Torbjoern.

And Croustibat, funny you mention that...a double-album was the original idea.

More details available from Sunday or so on Royksopp.de

:D I came across this while browsing the wiki. dunno if anyone has posted it before.

Confirmed Tracks

"The Alcoholic"

source from:
Jones, Damian (March 20, 2009). "Röyksopp return with third album". BBC Newsbeat. Retrieved on 2009-03-23.

Of the tracks set to feature on the next record, The Alcoholic, in particular stands out for Berge.

"With that track we had this romantic, nostalgic idea based on this hobo who hitchhikes on trains and travels from place to place," he adds before confirming his apple has now turned brown.

"He's not an alcoholic in that sad way one would think of an alcoholic. He is much more of a drifter and dreamer."

Senior is not a joke. Torbjörn talked about it in an interview (mentioning that it is not a joke), it's a tribute to the 70's when albums were divided into two and the second part was released later.

Junior is happier, more pop songs (vocals play main role), Senior is darker side, more Royksopp sound to it (no vocals).

More details are coming up. But as nothing has announced officially, some sayings are changed now and then. Anyway, just a little unofficial info and take it easy.

From an earlier interviw on Rave Magazine:
http://www.ravemagazine.com.au/content/view/14156/30/

Senior, contrary to what one might expect, will not feature male vocalists to balance out the many women on Junior – in fact, it will be mostly instrumental. "There will be one or two vocal tracks on it, but it’s not going to have straightforward pop songs – I guess you would say that it has tracks instead of songs, and they’re going to be longer and more experimental." Like Lindstrom’s recent space-disco epic Where You Go, I Go Too, I wonder? "Not exactly like that," Brundtland tells me, "because that album was focussed on the dance floor, but ours will not be so much. If Junior is dressed in a t-shirt and cool sneakers, then Senior is going to show up dressed in tweed and smoking a pipe ..."

And then in another later intervew, they say the album is entirely instrumental.
http://www.timeoutdubai.com/nightlife/f ... 2-royksopp

‘Junior is, compared to what we’ve done before, more driven by vocals,’ enthuses Svein. ‘It’s also more energetic than what we’ve done in the past. Senior is completely robbed of vocals – it’s all instrumentals. It’s more introspective, withdrawn and atmospheric whereas Junior has the more youthful, direct energy.

‘We wanted Junior to be connected to how we experienced youth as young adults, so there’s the classic boy-girl relationships, the difficulty in communicating, the paranoia, the anxiety and the interest in nightlife. And then in Senior it’s about being 40 or 50 years old, looking at all these potential fates – there are tracks called ‘The Alcoholic’, ‘The Fear’ and ‘Coming Home’.

At least we get 3 tracks confirmed now
I suppose the whole Senior has not completely finished (such as tracklist decision and other final production or somehing), that's why they change saying sometimes.
